It hadn’t stopped raining during the entire project, but nobody had mentioned anything about flooding. It wasn’t until we were in the final stages that we noticed the roads had become submerged and the water was rising!

I could see the police were shutting roads and I knew we had a decision to make – stay with the customer and risk being stranded or attempt to leave the area before the situation got worse. Keen to get home quickly and safely, after being away from our families for three days, we decided to brave the floods.

We didn’t want to abandon the car, so thought the best option would be to drive out of the village. There was a tense moment, when the water was so deep it came up to the car door – I even questioned if we’d made the right decision – but we held our breath and thankfully reached dry land.

When we got through the flood, it was the best feeling ever because home was in sight and I knew I was going to see my family very soon. Everyone agreed getting home on time made it worth the risk, and soon the flooding and any anxieties became a distant memory.

While the project was ultimately delivered on schedule, I learnt about the importance of home, prioritising family above anything else, and that risks are easier to take when you have a great team around you.
