I was on the project from March to July 2020, and despite the increased regulations from the UK government, my status as a key worker allowed me – and the team – to continue working. We were able to complete the project in Durham successfully, while maintaining social distancing and testing regularly for COVID.

There was great support from everyone involved, including the sub-contractors, site management and project management. Human resources in India were very helpful as well – they even called me every week to check that I was okay. During that time, it was important to prioritise families, so I was happy to see key workers flying back home to India rather than going myself.

Although I was living away from home at the height of lockdown, it was rewarding to know that Vanderlande and our customer were playing an important role in supplying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the UK. I was the only person from India who chose to stay on location, and together with my European colleagues, I was able to cover for the reduced workforce.

Despite the challenges, I enjoyed my time in Durham and have fond memories of where I lived – and exploring British supermarkets! Overall, I learnt how to tackle a project with limited personnel through great teamwork, and still apply what I experienced today.
